The temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) rehabilitation

The TMJ is a particular and complex joint: This joint has teeth! This is the reason why your dentist and your physiotherapist have to work in close cooperation. Each of them has a role to play in the TMJ rehabilitation.

Cracks ? Pain? Block ?
Problems to TMJ can come from a disfunction of the Temporomandibular, from the cervical area or even from the cranio-cervical area.

As for all joints, we can find in the TMJ joint surfaces, synovial fluid, a cap, ligaments, muscles, tendons and even a joint disc. all this network can be weakened by arthrosis, inflammation, capsular shrinkage,  ligament laxity,  muscular tensions or an articular lock following the joint disc displacement.

Patients can show one or several symptoms such as :

• Migraines / facial and neck pain
• Numbness or "pins and needles" sensations around the jaw
• Pain when chewing, squeezing teeth or yawning
• Jaw crack or block
• A rattling sound / friction sensation when opening the mounth or when chewing
• A drop in jaw movements
• A Change in the way the upper teeth meet the down teeth

Your physiotherapist can treat these symptoms

First of all an assessment of the posture, of the cervical amplitude, of the cranio-cervical area and of the temporo-mandibular joint are done.
After that, an assessment of the muscles tension and the ligamentous stability are perfomed.

For the treatment, the physiotherapists will use :

• Manual therapy in order to restore a normality in the movements.
• Temporal, under occipital lobe and interocclusal muscles relaxation techniques
...

With these techniques, the aim is to reduce the problems, the symptoms and to recover healthy TMJ.
